“Why Our Core Values Matter” (09/03/23)

Rev. Mary Murray Shelton

Our spiritual community identified Community as one of our top values. But what is a community? And what does it mean to be a spiritual community? Our Leadership Council defined community as, “a welcoming place of belonging where spiritual growth is supported and shared.” The key words are welcoming and belonging, so those on a journey of spiritual growth can find like minded people and inclusivity here.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “beloved community” is “…a global vision in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth….poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood.”

Today we’ll take a look together at how Science of Mind philosophy supports both definitions, and consider how best to more fully live as Community.
