“Why Is Love So Messy?” (02/11/24)

Rev. Mary Murray Shelton

If you’ve ever been in a longterm relationship—whether with a close friend or loving partner—you’ve experienced the confusing, complicated journey of meeting life with another person. No two people have exactly the same background, experiences, perspectives or opinions. The unique mix we each bring can make communication and agreement challenging!

But like anything that is worthwhile, what comes forward through our investment of time and energy yields increased value. Messiness is inherent in creativity, and it’s true in creating meaningful connections with others, too. In Shakespeare’s play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Helena says, “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.” Let’s consider together a broader picture of Love than the typical Valentine partner. Who do we count among those we love? How can we love them better?
