As a culture, when we think about people we admire for their strength we include both positive and negative qualities. Or perhaps it’s more accurate to call them capacities we love or fear. We appreciate clarity, honesty, decisiveness and humor. We avoid anger, stubbornness, sarcasm and manipulation. But these also have their place sometimes. Strong people can be fierce, immoveable, cutting and strategic, and if they are acting this way to protect or support us, we can appreciate them a lot. To be strong ourselves, we do best when we use these mindfully and sparingly, with attention and caring.
