Fear and love can’t co-exist. We can only feel one of these at a time. When we’re in fear, we defend against and withdraw from the people or things we fear. But fear is usually not necessary. It’s an automatic response that can arise from habit and earlier, similar experiences from childhood. Fear can serve a life-sustaining purpose when we’re in real danger. But many of us revert to fear over situations where it isn’t helpful at all. Fear of telling the truth. Fear of asking for what we want. Fear of trying something new because we might look awkward. These applications of fear box us in and limit our lives in unnecessary ways. Let’s consider how we might make new choices, and realize that sometimes—maybe most of the time—that feeling of fear should be interpreted as “pay attention” rather than “stop.”
