Everyone can think of times in their lives when they were treated unfairly or hurt by someone else. We can dwell on these hurts, becoming less and less present in life now. These grudges are like a slow leak in a tire. They drain us of some of the energy that could be used to enhance the goodness in our lives. We’ve never seen a grudge that made anyone’s life better.
Forgiveness is freedom. It’s not done for the other person. It’s done to set us free from carrying the burden of grievance all the time. Forgiveness doesn’t mean what was done is okay. It doesn’t mean we have to allow that to be done again. It means we no longer are hurting ourselves with the memory of it. We have genuinely let it go. Then we’re free. Today we’ll consider the ways forgiveness makes sense in creating the lives we want to experience.
