Inner freedom can be claimed and experienced regardless of any outer conditions or circumstances. That’s not to say it’s easy to do in situations of high stress, grief, pain or danger. I think of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Victor Frankl, Anne Frank, and many others who maintained a positive view of humanity in the midst of terrible injustice, prejudice and cruelty. Although our challenges—to us—always feel big, this choice is still always ours to make. No one can make another person think or feel a particular way within themselves. When we claim our inner freedom we also loosen ourselves from playing the victim to our own thoughts and emotions. Boundaries matter. Today we’ll explore them and see if we can make that choice and become more free.
