Many of us grew up in spiritual traditions that used the terms “pagan” and “ritual” to mean something dark and dangerous. It was a tactic to pre-empt any curiosity or exploration of these. “Ritual” is associated with Satanic practices that involve the harm of animals and children. “Pagan” has referred to unsophisticated, superstitious spiritual beliefs. But these definitions are partial and inaccurate. Today we’ll delve into the sacredness of rituals, why human beings create them, and what rituals are alive in our lives and cultures today.
