The book of Genesis in the Hebrew Bible begins with creation and its immediate aftermath. Christian churches have used this story to find fault with woman generically. Eve’s choice to disobey God (with the encouragement of the snake—a symbol of feminine power) and to convince Adam to disobey as well, is the origin of the idea of “Original Sin.” As Matthew Fox says, what we received at creation was Original Blessing, not sin. Today we’ll explore an alternate interpretation of the story.
