Mothers have nearly a year to see themselves transforming from simply a woman into a mother. Not exactly the same for fathers. Oh, they understand intellectually that they’re going to be dads, but nothing demands their attention in quite the same way. A man’s child or children are what make him a father. He is transformed by them. It’s a thrilling, frightening, sometimes heart-breaking or pride inducing ride. It plunges a man into the unknown and reintroduces him to all he doesn’t yet know. This is true with the first child, but since no two kids are the same (even twins) each time he becomes a parent again the training continues, and so does the humbling.
We love dads and know they want the best for us and for our dreams to become our reality, even if theirs didn’t.
Today, we celebrate the goofy, embarrassing, strong, impressive boy-men who are our dads. We celebrate our brothers, uncles, cousins and sons who are dads, as well as our own dads and granddads, and, if you’re a dad, of course yourself! They are endless mysteries of discovery, silliness, stubbornness, and joy. Thank God for fathers!
