“Will Power vs. Willingness” (08/25/24)

Rev. Mary Murray Shelton

Will power is a double-edged sword. It can give us power to choose and focus on attitudes, thoughts and beliefs of possibility. We can choose, again and again, to reset our expectations to expectancy of greater Good. Or, we can use our will power to resist what is happening, to delay our growth and deny the grace coming to us.

A wise man once said, “Most people are walking cases of suppressed happiness.” We might call it subconsciousness happiness because we’re often unaware of the happiness inside us that we dismiss because it isn’t giving us pain or discomfort. Our attention goes instead to what we want to be rid of. Let’s flip that around today and use our great will power in the service of our willingness to be happy.
